If you look closely, you can see the horizontal striations that result from the sediment layers that were compressed to form the rock formations here. The layers between the major layers weather/erode faster, so you get this really regular pancake effect. Means that the stone breaks into very regular plates when it erodes. Tumbled in the surf, this is how you get the beachfull of perfect skipping stones I posted in my last note.
